Gen4 3S-GTE Swap!

112,589 km

Today the MR2 was picked up and towed to The Speed Syndicate to begin it’s engine swap!  A Gen4 3S-GTE from a ‘97-01 JDM Toyota Caldina will replace the stock 2.2L 5S-FE.

I first toyed with the idea of a Gen4 swap after reading about PrimeMR2.com in April 2016. In March 2017, the idea resurfaced after taking a drive in a 2015 Subaru WRX STI. 305 HP, 290 lb-ft. The Smile on my face.  After a bit more research and some basic number crunching, I pulled the trigger and ordered the DIY Level 3 (Loaded) Swap Package from PrimeMR2.com.  I chose TSS (The Speed Syndicate) to perform the swap after talking about it with Curtis Wong of TSS.  TSS initially tried to get me a Gen4 3S-GTE and apparently had one on route but it turned out to be a Gen5.

It’s going to be a new car.

Over the years, I’ve been asked countless times if it was a Turbo. The naturally aspirated was fun and torquey around town but it was never fast. If I could have gone back, I would have traded it in for a ‘93 Turbo. In white.
